The best time for trekking in Ladakh is from May to October. Two winter treks are organized from January to March every year in Ladakh, namely, the Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar river and the Snow Leopard trek.
1. Markha valley trek (5260m)
The Markha valley forms part of the Hemis national park which is the one of the most beautiful treks in Ladakh. This trek has some breathtaking mountain scenery, wild animals, and beautiful villages surrounded by mother nature. This location is surrounded by some scenic villages so you can enjoy homestays and experience the local culture.
This trek could take up to 6 to 8 days for completion, which depends upon starting point. There are two ways to reach Markha valley. One from Spituk and the other from Chilling. The spituk trek is a bit longer which crosses two passes, one is Ganda La and the other is Kongmaru La. Those who want an easy option so they can start their trek by Chilling.
2. Nubra valley trek from Phyang to Hunder (5438m)
This trek has many beautiful sceneries which will surprise you at every moment. The trek from Phyang to Hunder connects the Indus valley to Nubra valley. Lasermo la pass which is the highest point of this trek is covered by snow even in summer. You can have a ride on a double-humped Bactrian camel at Hunder sand dunes after your trek. There is also a marvelous 32 meter tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha at Diskit monastery.
The best time for trekking here is from mid-July to the end of September. The duration for the completion of this trek is 5 days.
3. Rumtse to Tsomoriri trek (5435m)
Again a very beautiful and wild trek in Ladakh. This trek could take up to a week to complete. You will see mountains of different shapes and colors while crossing the 6 passes above 5000 meters. Even though Ladakh is a cold desert, it has some beautiful lakes to offer to visitors. You’ll discover the most scenic Tsokar and Tsomoriri lakes here.
Korzok, the largest hamlet in the region, is the main settlement where the Changpa tribe resides, which is located on the banks of the sapphire-blue lake of Tsomoriri. The best time for this trek is mid-June to mid-October.
4. Sham valley trek (3874m)
This is the easiest and most suitable trek in Ladakh if you are coming with your family. You can venture on this trek throughout the year. Sham valley trek never goes above 4000 meters and it offers you some astonishing picturesque views.
You can do homestay at some villages near this trek where you can experience the local cuisine prepared by the villagers. The duration of this trek is 3 days.
5 . Stok Kangri climb (6153m)
The Stok Kangri climb is easy to achieve but still, use mountaineering gears, safety kit and medical kit for this trek. The expedition guide is a helpful tool for the same.
This trek is physically demanding, but the view will compensate for all the effort. The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains are astounding.
